Barbitos

Barbitos

Barbitos is an instrument very relative to the ancient Greek lyre. The difference is in the length of the strings. It is a much thinner and taller instrument, and this creates a low pich sound to the instrument, and more sensual. It is associated with lyrical poetry and is beleived to be the instrument that Sappho played.

The number of barbito’s strings is not known. Sometimes is referred as a three-stringed instrument and sometimes as a multi-stringed one, and there is a possibility that its name comes from the greek words “Varis”(Low) and “Mitos”(String) viz, a low piched string, because the instrument produces low frequencies.
